Receiving regular prenatal massage from a trained practitioner is one of the best things you can do for yourself during your pregnancy. Pregnancy massage is wonderful for easing low back pain and shoulder tension, reducing swelling in your hands and feet, increasing circulation, reducing cramping in the legs, and helping you adjust to your changing body. In low-risk pregnancies, massage is perfectly safe, and you can receive treatments from the beginning of your second trimester up to your baby's birth day. In higher risk pregnancies, you will need the consent of your doctor or midwife before receiving prenatal massage. Postpartum massage therapy is also wonderful for promoting the restoration of your abdomen as well as easing tension and pain in your shoulders, low back, and forearms caused by holding and breastfeeding your new baby.
